Dr. H. Dele Davies is Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean for Graduate Studies at the University of Nebraska Medical (UNMC). He holds MD and Masters of Science in Epidemiology degrees from the University of Toronto, Canada and Masters of Science in Health Care Management from the Harvard School of Public Health. He is specialty trained in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases from the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada. Davies was previously Chair of Pediatrics and Human Development at Michigan State University (MSU) (2003-2012) and Director of the Child Health Research Unit at Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, Canada prior to that (1993-2003).
Davies has more than 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals related to his research or infectious diseases topics in addition to edited books and other scholarly publications and numerous presentations at national and international meetings. His areas of research interest are in infectious diseases, especially perinatal infections caused by Group A and B streptococcus.
His research has been funded by several agencies including the National Institutes of Health, the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. In April of 2017, Davies completed a 6-year term on the “Red Book” Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics. During his service, he was appointed as the “Ebola Czar” representing the committee and updating them on activities related to Ebola. He led the development of statements on infectious complications of biologic response modifiers, sports related infections, parental presence during outbreaks of Ebola and contributed to several other statements, writing of Red Book Chapters and an AAP Newsletter related to Ebola. He now serves as Co-Chair of the Advisory Board of the HHS funded UNMC National Center for Health Security and Biopreparedness: Training, Simulation and Quarantine Center at UNMC.
He has previously served a five-year term as a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Centers for Infectious Diseases of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Atlanta), on the NIH (NIAID) Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (MIDB) Study Section on training grants, and as Secretary-Treasurer of the Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs. Davies is also Past Chair of the Pediatric Investigators Collaborative Network on Infections in Canada and has served on the Canadian Pediatric Society Infectious Diseases and Immunization Committee and Health Canada’s Committee to Advise on Tropical Medicine and Travel.
