"My heritage gives me a unique perspective that makes me embrace diversity. As Puerto Rican, I grew up appreciating diversity."
Carilyn Garcia, Division of Training, Program Analyst has been in public service for over 17 years, and with ASPR for the past 12 years.
What motivated you to work at ASPR? The ASPR mission, to assist the country in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from public health emergencies and disasters; is a mission that is dear to my heart. The challenges that we face day to day, the passion of knowing that we are helping others in the worst of times, and the honor of working with such passionate partners motivate me every day to give my best. I could not ask for a more rewarding job.
My job matters because we ensure that the responders in the National Disaster Medical System are prepared to go out to the field during disasters. We identify weaknesses in the system and ensure proper tools and training are provided to our team members. Readiness and support of our team members are key in the success of their assigned missions.
Does your heritage shape the way that you serve the public or give you a unique perspective that contributes to public service? I am a Latina and proud of my Puerto Rican roots. My heritage gives me a unique perspective that enables me to embrace diversity. As Puerto Rican, I grew up appreciating diversity. I was blessed with grandparents and parents that taught me to embrace different cultures and diversity.
Has your work impacted Hispanic or Latino communities? I would say yes. My first task in NDMS was to find a way to credential the PR-1 team. I was able to pioneer a system - the Puerto Rico (PR-1) team. The PR-1 is a fully bilingual team, and it increased the NDMS response capabilities.
